Head Coach Scott Hall announced nine incoming recruits for the 2011 season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Head Coach Scott Hall of the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team has announced that nine players have signed national letters of intent to join the Eagles next season. The commitments include: Angela Vultaggio (Romeo, Mich.-L'Anse Cruese North), Bianca Rossi (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus), Hallee Kansman (Farmington, Mich.-North Farmington), Leah Schmitz (Troy, Mich.-Troy Athens), Emily Dzik (Troy, Mich.-Troy), Molli Krick (Novi, Mich.-Novi), Marisa Kozikowski (Troy, Mich.-Troy Athens), Martha Stevens (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Marian) and Anna Vess (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Eisenhower).
“This is a very talented group of players,” Hall said of his incoming recruiting class. “There was a real elite group of players coming out of Michigan this year and [Assistant Coach] Joe [Malachino] and I really tried to exploit it and all of its talent by tapping into its top clubs: Vardar, Michigan Gators, Michigan Jaguars and Bloomfield Force.
“We have covered and exceeded a lot of needs with this new group of student-athletes,” Hall added.
Vultaggio is a speedy forward out of Romeo, Mich. and played her club ball with the Michigan Gators.
“Angela brings major speed and comfort on the ball to our forward line,” Hall said. “We expect her to come in and contribute by running at defenses and scoring big goals.”
Rossi is the lone Canadian recruit as she hails from Mississauga, Ontario. Another frontline player with a knack for finding the goal, Rossi played her club soccer with the Erin Mills Eagles.
“What we liked about Bianca is she is a frontrunner who finds ways to score,” Hall said. “She has a tremendous work rate and finds ways to get to the goal. We will depend on her to make her presence known in the Mid-American Conference.”
Kansman is a native of Farmington, Mich. who spent her club soccer playing for the Michigan Jaguars.
“Hallee is the all-around student-athlete,” Hall said. “We love her training attitude along with her commitment to academics.
“Her heading ability along with her 1v1 defending will be welcomed into our backline. She is going to be a great fixture for the next four years at EMU.”
Schmitz, a native of Troy, Mich. and former member of the Bloomfield Force is another offensive weapon for Hall and his squad.
“Leah is a flat out athlete,” Hall emphasized. “She is very strong and fast which will bolster our frontline offensively and our commitment to press teams.”
Dzik, also a native of Troy, played club soccer for the Michigan Gators. Last summer, she spent making the Region 2 Olympic development team with her ability on the backline and should make a difference in the MAC next year as a freshman.
“We have watched a lot of Emily and it's evident she has improved every year by leaps and bounds,” Hall said. “She really opened a lot of eyes last summer with her athleticism, heading ability and awareness of the game, playing as a center back.”
Krick is a midfielder out of nearby Novi, Mich. where she played club soccer for the Michigan Jaguars.
“Molli is a very technical center midfielder who plays very simple and smart,” Hall said. “She likes being around the ball and involved in the game, and although she is quiet, she is quite the competitor.”
Kozikowski is the third recruit to come out of Troy, Mich. this year and was also a member of the Michigan Jaguars club team. She is a versatile talent that can add a spark to either side of the field.
“Marisa is an outside back that loves to jump forward into the attack,” Hall said. “She is very smooth on the ball and can thread passes with ease. She can really help jump start attacks and maintain high pressure on opposing teams offensively and defensively.”
Stevens is a native of Bloomfield Hills, having played club ball for the Bloomfield Force. She has the mindset to fit in wherever the team needs her most and a competitiveness that becomes infectious.
“Martha is a great character kid for our team,” Hall said. “She has a great passion for people and the game of soccer, and in the EMU system, she will fit in nicely anywhere in the midfield and up front. Her competitiveness and drive will make this team better.”
Vess is a goalkeeper that hails from Shelby Twp., having played her club soccer for Vardar.
“We targeted Anna early in our recruiting because she is so much fun to watch in goal,” Hall said. “She has all the tools to become a big time goalkeeper in our conference. She is tall, athletic and quick.
“We will need her to be a quick study to vie for the starting job between the pipes.”
Each recruit will be eligible to compete this fall.
