Box Score
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – In a battle of Eagles, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team took an early lead and out-hit its counterpart, but could not hang on as the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles took game one of a three-game set, 7-1, at Bush Stadium Friday, Feb. 25.
Eastern Michigan starting pitcher Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) held TTU to without a hit through the first three innings until a Zach Stephens' fourth-inning home run broke up the no-hit bid and gave the Golden Eagles a lead they would never relinquish.
TTU starter Tristan Archer went eight innings, giving up a run (unearned) on eight hits while striking out nine batters and walking none en route to his first victory and TTU's first win of the season.
With the loss, EMU falls to 1-4 on the young season while Tennessee Tech improves to 1-4 with the win.
EMU grabbed the early lead in the third inning on a Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) one out RBI single to left field that scored Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC) from third base. The Eagles loaded the bases later on in the frame, but Archer buckled down and struck out Ben Magsig before getting Zack Leonard to ground out to third to end the inning.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth when the Golden Eagles cracked the scoring column. Zack Stephens tallied the team's first hit with a two-run homer that scored Chad Oberacker who reached first on a wild pitch after striking out.
TTU then added three more runs in the sixth, all with two outs. Stephens started the scoring barrage with a double to left before the next batter, Devin Rivers, cranked his first home run of the season to make it 4-1. The Golden Eagles would add an unearned run later on to make it 5-1.
TTU then tallied a pair in the seventh to provide the final margin of 7-1. Stephens led the hosts with a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBI. Rivers also tallied two hits while driving in a trio of runs.
For the Eagles, Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-West Union) turned in a quiet 3-for-4 day while Russell and Magsig each recorded multi-hit days by going 2-for-4 at the plate.
EMU and TTU will match-up again in game two of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sophomore Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) will take the hill for EMU while Matt Shepherd will get the start for TTU.
