Team rallies after losing doubles point

LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) -- In closing out a three-match weekend in Lincoln, Neb., the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was able to upend the University of Northern Iowa, 4-3, in a neutral site matchup, Saturday, Feb. 13. With the win, the Eagles return home from their Midwest road trip having gone 2-1 in the three contests.

After narrowly dropping each of the three doubles matches, the Eagles rallied, winning four of the six singles bouts to take the match.

Northern Iowa's Laia Gonzalez and Phoebe, who, paired, are the No. 90 doubles team in the nation, cuold not continue their hot hands in singles play, as Miriam Westerink beat Walker, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles spot, and Nino Mebuke topped Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot.

Xu Chang also came away victorious for EMU, taking the No. 3 singles match in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, in come-from-behind fashion.

The Eagles were able to clinch the victory with a Marcela Rivero win at the No. 5 singles position. Rivero beat Krissy Lankelma, 6-4, 6-2, en route to an EMU victory.

"Northern Iowa is a solid team and probably in the top two in the Missouri Valley Conference, so this is a decent win for us," said EMU head coach Ryan Ray. "There are a lot of teams in the MAC of about similar level, so this could be a precursor to the type of matches we need to win later on. Our doubles still needs a lot of improvement, but I'm glad to see the ladies respond after dropping the doubles point."

EMU will be back in action Feb. 28 when the team travels to Florida to take on Florida International University.
