Eagles invite more than 500 wrestlers to compete in season opener
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will begin the 2011-12 campaign with the 20th Annual EMU Open Saturday, Nov. 5. The Eagles invite over 500 wrestlers from across the nation to compete in the event that will serve as the season opener for several squads.
The Green and White embarks on its 56th season of competition beginning with Saturday's EMU Open. Wrestling will get underway at 9 a.m. The unattached event will feature Division I, II and III wrestlers from all corners of the country including more than 50 nationally-ranked grapplers.
The event also serves as a great opportunity for the local wrestling community to catch some of the best early season action between a variety of schools representing all divisions and conferences.
Six Eagles advanced to a championship match in last season's Open, which included a first place finish by Filiberto Colon at 133 lbs. in the Open Division. In that same division, Mike LeHolm (141 lbs.) and Corey Phillips (149 lbs.) claimed runner-up honors.
In the freshman-sophomore division, Mike LeHolm (141 lbs.), Mike Curby (174 lbs.) and Khodor Hoballah (184 lbs.) all took runner-up honors in their respective weight classes.
The EMU Open marks the first of six home dates on the schedule for the Eagles this season. They will host Ohio University, Dec. 4, and Central Michigan University, Jan. 13, before bringing in Clarion University, Indiana Tech and Indianapolis, Jan. 15, to compete in the EMU Duals. The home schedule will finish off with Northern Illinois University, Jan. 22, and the University at Buffalo, Feb. 8.
