Eagles Set to Host Rochester College on Wednesday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will host Rochester College in a pre-Thankgiving game Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, in the Convocation Center.

Head Coach Rob Murphy's Eagles are 3-1 on the season after recording a 66-64 road win at IUPUI Sunday, Nov. 20, as part of their four-game Auto-Owners Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University.

Rochester enters Wednesday's game with a 9-2 record after a 76-59 setback at the University of Tennessee-Martin, Nov. 19.

LAMPLEY NAMED MAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  EMU senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for Nov. 21, 2011.  Lampley led the Eagles in scoring in three games last week, including a career-best 21 in a 62-51 win over Arkansas-Little Rock, Nov. 18.  He had 16 in a 66-64 win at IUPUI, Nov. 20, and 15 in a 66-49 loss at Texas Southern. Lampley averaged 33.7 minutes a game in those three outings.

FAST START FOR MURPHY:  The Rob Murphy Era of Eastern Michigan University men's basketball opened successfully as the Eagles downed the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, 68-57, Friday, Nov. 11, in the Convocation Center. The Eagles rallied from six-points down in the second half to record the win. The Eagles are currently 3-1 under Murphy's leadership.

38th MAC SEASON:  The 2011-12 season will also be the 38th for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was  1974-75 when the then-Hurons went 12-14 overall and 4-9 in league play.

EMU has won three Mid-American Conference titles: 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1995-96, and the Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those years in addition to winning the tournament title in 1997-98.

CHECKING THE SERIES:  EMU and Rochester College have played three times in history with the Eagles winning all three.  The first meeting was Dec. 10, 2002 in Ypsilanti and the Eagles posted a 97-48 win. They met again on Dec. 7, 2004, in EMU's Convocation Center and Eastern posted an 82-29 win. The last matchup was Dec. 21, 2010 as part of the Lou Henson Tournament hosted by Oakland University in Rochester and Eastern recorded an 82-63 victory.

EAGLES SET FOR TWO IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS:  The 2011-12 EMU men's basketball team will have two in-season tournaments during the regular season.

The Eagles will be part of the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University in November.  Eastern opens that invitational at Texas Southern, Nov. 15, will host Arkansas-Little Rock on Nov. 18, play at IUPUI, Nov. 20, before closing out with a Nov. 27 noon home date against Michigan State.
  
In the other in-season tournament, the Eagles will fly to California, Dec. 29-30, 2011, to play in the Cable Car Classic hosted by Santa Clara University.  Eastern is scheduled to play host Santa Clara, Dec. 29, and will then meet either Air Force or Wagner in the winner's or loser's bracket, Dec. 30.

EAGLES FACE FOES FROM 10 LEAGUES:  The 2011-12 EMU men's basketball team will square off against teams from at least 12 different leagues. In addition to its Mid-American Conference schedule, the Eagles will meet teams from the Big Ten (Michigan State and Purdue), the SWAC (Texas Southern), Sun Belt (Ark.-Little Rock), Horizon (UIC), Patriot (Colgate), Missouri Valley (Drake), Big South (Radford), Big East (Syracuse), Summit (IUPUI), ACC (Virginia Tech), West Coast (Santa Clara). The Eagles will also meet a Northeast Conference team (Wagner) or a Mountain West team (Air Force) in the second day of the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, Calif.

CONVO GETS NEW FLOOR FOR 2011-12 SEASON: The basketball court within the Convocation Center will have a new look for the 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University basketball season. For the first time since its opening prior to the 1998-99 season, a new floor has been installed in the main arena of the Convocation Center.

The 13-year old floor was the home to the 1998 NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, Texas prior to being installed at the Convocation Center.

Once added as the Eagles' home floor it was home to multiple championship squads including three MAC West Division championships in women's basketball and one MAC West Division title in volleyball. The old floor was the host floor for a pair of MAC Men's Basketball Tournament games, four MAC Volleyball Tournament matches, five MAC Women's Basketball Tournament games and one Women's National Invitation Tournament game.
