Four Eagles Distinguished with 2011 MAC Awards

Stein took the Defensive Player of the Year award, while Crawshaw, Iaquaniello and Mason were named to All-MAC Teams
GENEVA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team received multiple honors for the 2011 campaign Thursday, Nov. 17. The Eagles (21-10, 9-7 MAC) placed four players on the All-MAC First and Freshmen Teams along with an athlete being named the Defensive Player of the Year. Voting was conducted by conference coaches.
Senior libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) was named to the All-MAC First Team, as well as, being tabbed as the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year, while senior Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) and junior Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) collected first team accolades. Middle blocker Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) was named to the All-Freshmen team, garnering her first conference award.
A 2010 All-MAC First Team selection, Haley Stein was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year after amassing 623 digs, good for 11th nationally and 5.37 per set. The Carleton, Mich. native was able to rack up 54 assists, while notching 25 aces on the season for EMU. Stein maintained a .955 reception percentage on the year, making just 35 errors in 771 attempts.
Stein was also named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week once this season. She ranks second on the career digs list with 2,136, she is trailing EMU's all-time digs leader Ashley Cudney (2,198), as she attempts to break that record with a successful MAC Tournament performance.
A 2010 All-MAC Second Team selection, Mason is averaging 10.35 assists per set. Mason also ranks second on the Eagles' squad this season in digs by picking up 318, good for 2.74 per set and second among all MAC setters. Mason has amassed 117 kills this season, also second among MAC setters. Mason also sits second in points among all MAC setters.
Mason is now the career leader in sets played, as well as, ranking second all-time in EMU history for assists. The Eastlake, Ohio native was a two-time All-Tournament team selection during the 2011 campaign, first named to the Shamrock Invitational All-Tournament Team at Notre Dame on Aug. 28, then was named to the Utah Invite's All-Tournament team on Sept. 10.
Named to the All-MAC First Team for the second straight year, Iaquaniello is second in the Mid-American Conference with 3.99 kills per set this season, totaling 455 on the year. She is also second in points per set at 4.40. Iaquaniello not only led Eastern in kills, but aces as well with 32. The junior has also been great on the defensive side of things, picking up 310 digs, good for 2.72 per set. She has maintained a .968 reception percentage, making just 10 receiving errors in 308 attempts on the season. The junior has 28.0 total blocks on the year, along with 12 double-double performances and has been in double-figures for kills in 29 of the Eagles' 31 matches throughout the 2011 campaign.
Iaquaniello is moving up the Eastern Michigan career kill ranks as she sits at fourth overall in EMU history with 1,382 kills. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational on Sept. 4, as well as being named to the Shamrock Invitational's All-Tournament team on Aug. 28. In addition to her tournament honors, she was named MAC West Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6, and MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on Sept. 30.
Joining Iaquaniello, Mason and Stein on the All-MAC first team are: Ball State's Kara Bates, Jennifer Boyd, Kelsey Brandl and Catie Fredrich, Bowling Green's Danielle Tonyan, Central Michigan's Kaitlyn Schultz, Miami's Cassie Farrell, Northern Illinois' Kristin Hoffman, Mary Kurisch and Lauren Wicinski, Ohio's Kelly Lamberti and Katie Post and Western Michigan's Jessica Brown, Terrin Norris and Lena Oliver.
Crawshaw earned her first MAC honors by being named to the All-Freshmen Team. Crawshaw filled the void for the Eagles in the middle during her rookie year donning the Green and White. Playing in 97 sets as a true freshman, the Mattawan, Mich. native piled up 111 kills (1.14 kills per set) and 65.0 total blocks (.67 blocks per set). Crawshaw picked up a career-high nine kills in the Eagles final home match against the Central Michigan Chippewas. The middle blocker was able to have a .500 or better hitting percentage on six different occasions throughout the season, including her 9-1-16 performance against the Chips on Nov. 3.
In addition to Crawshaw the rest of the All-MAC Freshmen team includes: Buffalo's Liz Scott, Central Michigan's Kaitlyn McIntyre, Ohio's Chelsea Bilger and Kelly Lamberti, and Western Michigan's Terrin Norris.
Coach of the Year honors will be named Wednesday following the conclusion of the MAC Volleyball Tournament. The MAC Volleyball Tournament begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. in at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. Follow all the tournament action at MAC Volleyball Tournament Central.
The Eagles open up the MAC Tournament with the Ball State Cardinals at the SPIRE Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio, Friday, Nov. 18. First-serve is set for 11 a.m.
The Eagles hold a 2-0 record over the Cardinals on the season. EMU won both matches by a tally of 3-1, most recently Thursday, Nov. 10 when Eastern took the match in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-18 and 28-26).
