Four Eagles ranked in top-four of individual weight class
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches poll released by the league office Wednesday, Oct. 19. In addition, four Eagles were ranked in the top-four in their respective weight classes.
EMU received 13 points in the team poll, which is 16 behind Kent State University. In second with 18 points is 10-time defending MAC champion Central Michigan University.
Redshirt senior Andrew Novak was tabbed second at 133 lbs. At 157 lbs., redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer was ranked tied for second with Donnie Corby of CMU. Redshirt junior Chris Eggert received a nod for second place at 165 lbs. and redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg was tied for second with Chad Friend of CMU at 197 lbs.
The six schools were ranked based on the number of first through fourth-place votes that were earned in the individual voting system. A first-place vote was worth four team points; a second-place vote earned three team points; third-seeded votes were worth two team points, while a fourth-place tally earned that team one point in the team ranking system.
The 2012 MAC Wrestling Championships will be held March 4 and hosted by Ohio University. Last year, Central Michigan won its tenth consecutive MAC wrestling championship with 79 team points. Kent State was the runner-up with 73.5 points, while Buffalo was third with 69.5 points.
