EMU Tripped Up in OT by Broncos, 1-0

Maggie Manville made seven saves

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team's two-game winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16, with a 1-0 double overtime setback to in-state rival Western Michigan University. Brittney Pavlica of WMU scored the game's only goal with two minutes remaining in the final overtime.

Sunday's contest featured limited scoring chances between a pair of teams which are accustomed to tight, low-scoring affairs. Western Michigan's goal was just the third for either team in the previous four meetings between the Eagles and Broncos dating back to the 2009 season.

The Eagles (2-11-2; 2-5-1 MAC) tallied eight shots—six on goal— with Stephanie Clarke firing a pair on WMU goalkeeper Michelle Watson.

Five Eagles, Julie Kaim, Emily Dzik, Jessica Thomas, Angela Vultaggio and Katie Marsh, played the entire 108 minutes in a losing effort.

The Broncos (9-7-0; 5-3-0 MAC) launched 23 shots including seven on Maggie Manville. Pavlica's goal was her fourth of the season and was assisted by Megan Putnam and Diana Dedvukaj.

Following an evenly-played first half, the Broncos controlled a large portion of the action in the second half. With less than five minutes to play in regulation, Manville made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the first overtime, Manville was again called upon to make a save to preserve the tie. Clarke provided the Eagles' best scoring chance in the 104th minute, but her attempt was denied by Watson.

Seconds later, WMU nearly ended the game when a shot off a corner kick was sent sailing over the net. Then in the 108th minute, Pavlica caught a pass from the left side and tucked her shot into the lower right corner of the net to end the game.

The Green and White return home for its final three games of the 2011 regular season beginning Friday, Oct. 21, at Scicluna Field. EMU will host Ball State University at 3 p.m.
