YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program recently donated $2,500 to the volleyball team's continued effort in the fight against breast cancer. The dreaded disease has certainly had an impact on EMU head men's basketball coach Charles E. Ramsey's family, whose mother in-law, Rochelle Lester, lost her own battle with breast cancer this past year.
"Women touch our lives everyday," mentioned Ramsey. " We all have mothers, wives, sisters or daughters and that is why I thought it was important to support a cause like this."
Over the past three years, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball program has raised more than $15,000 as part of its annual "Dig Pink" fundraising campaign in support of the Side-Out Foundation.
Presenting the check during the Central Michigan-Eastern Michigan football game were Coach Ramsey and student-athletes Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman), Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing Bridgton (Maine) Academy) and Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough (Fla.) C.C.).
Accepting the check on behalf of EMU volleyball and the Side-Out Foundation was Wendy Kivi, a staff member in the EMU Communications, Media & Theatre Arts Department, and also the mother of a former EMU volleyball player and a survivor of breast cancer.
EMU will host its annual Dig Pink match Saturday, Oct. 16, versus Bowling Green State University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
