The Eagles earn five wins at Day Two of William and Mary Invite
Williamsburg, Va. (EMUEagles.com) – Day two of the William & Mary Invite turned out slightly better than day one as the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis squad turned out five wins, including a doubles victory over the No. 40 duo in the nation.
Junior Miriam Westerink and newcomer Nino Mebuke defeated the No. 40 pair in the nation in Harvard's Holly Cao and Samantha Rosekrans with a 9-7 win. Weterink and Mebuke also won their first doubles match in day one of the Invite.
Eagle singles winners were junior Xu Chang, who won in straight sets over Virginia Tech's Isel Martinez-Marcos, and sophomore Celine Donnet, also a straight set winner over Virginia's Clare Spooner.
The team of Donnet and Marcela Rivero was able to overpower the competition in a Flight B consolidation doubles contest, while Xu and freshman Mariya Toncheva were also victorious over a pair from host school, William and Mary.
“I was very pleased with our effort today,” said Eagles' Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Our doubles was very good. Westerink and Mebuke defeated the No. 40 team in the nation and had the No. 28 team from Virginia down 6-2, but couldn't hold on for the win. We have one more day of competition here and then we can start working on the areas of need next week in practice.”
The William and Mary Invite will conclude Sunday, Sept. 12, as the Eagles wrap up a weekend of competition.
