ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After falling behind 1-0, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored a goal in the 81st minute to force overtime, eventually tying the University of Michigan, 1-1, Sunday, Aug. 22, in front of 958 fans at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Senior Maggie Christensen (Orland Park, Ill.-AA Stagg) found the back of the net with 8:31 remaining in regulation, forcing the game to overtime.
EMU is now 0-0-1 on the young season, while U-M moves to 1-0-1. The Wolverines totaled 32 shots in the match, including 11 on-goal. The Eagles only had eight shots on goal, with five of them on-goal.
The first half was an offensive struggle, as the teams combined for 21 shots in the opening 45 minutes of action. Both goalies were solid with EMU's Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) racking up five saves and Michigan's Haley Kopmeyer picking with a pair.
Following the intermission, U-M's Nkem Ezurike scored her second goal of the young season with 65:59 showing on the clock. The goal came via a pass from midfield from Kristen Goncalves for the 1-0 advantage.
Eastern Michigan's continued offensive persistence paid off at the 81:29 mark when Christensen took a pass from senior Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) and found the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Christensen's goal was the 12th of her career and just the second-ever goal scored by a visiting player at U-M's brand new soccer complex.
The defense was ratcheted up in the extra time as the Eagles were unable to get a shot off during either overtime period. The Wolverines managed just five shots, two on-goal, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Eagles continue their four-game opening road trip Friday, Aug. 27, with a stop at Illinois State University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Normal, Ill.
