Junior earns the honor for the second consecutive year with a 3.45 GPA as a business major

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University junior women's golfer Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) was named Academic All-Mid-American Conference, the conference office announced Monday, June 1. Peters was also named first team All-MAC team at the MAC Championships earlier this year.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Peters, who boasts a 3.45 GPA in business, averaged 76.2 strokes per round, good for seventh best in the conference. The Lake Orion, Mich. native finished with the sixth-lowest single-season average in school-history. She finished in the top 10 in five events, including a third-place finish at the Nittany Lion Invitational with a 221 (73-73-75).

Peters also tied for fourth at the Ross Resorts at Mid-Pines with a 54-hole total of 225 (74-73-78) and tied for fifth place at the Cardinal Classic with a 148 (71-77). She took home ninth place at UALR Women's Golf Classic with a 223 (76-75-72) and fired a season-low round of 71 in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic.

The Eagles finished with the best four-player team scoring average in school-history. Fifth-year head coach Sandy Wagner's crew recorded an averaged of 306.87, bettering the mark of 307.07 set by the 2007-08 squad. The mark is 17.81 strokes per 18 holes (306.87 to 324.68) better than when Wagner arrived on the Ypsilanti campus. Additionally, the total ranked second in the Mid-American Conference only behind Kent State University's average of 299.71.

A relatively young squad, with just one senior and four freshmen, the Eagles placed four golfers in the top 30 of the individual standings and finished in fourth place in the final standings at the 12th Annual Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship held at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind., April 23-25. It marked the fourth consecutive year that the Eagles had finished in the top four of the team standings at the MAC Championship with a 54-hole score of 926 (306-296-324). Junior Robyn Scott finished in third place to equal the best finish by an EMU student-athlete since the tournament began in 1999.
