Box score

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eight starters finished with at least one hit Sunday afternoon, May 2, for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, as the Eagles registered a 10-5 victory over the Ball State University Cardinals at Ball Diamond in Muncie, Ind.

Holding on to a 7-5 lead after eight innings, the EMU offense paved the way for a five-run edge, as RBI doubles by junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) and an RBI base hit by senior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) helped the Eagles take a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

From there, freshman pitcher Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) kept the Cardinals in check in relief of starter Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake), retiring the side in order to help the Eagles claim the win and avoid the sweep. Weber went the final three innings of the contest to earn the save, giving up no hits and no runs, while fanning four Cardinals. Lewis went six innings to earn the win and improve his record to 6-2 this season. Lewis gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits and five walks, while fanning seven batters.

Juniors Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.) and Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) both homered for EMU and finished with two RBI, while junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) went 2-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored in the victory.

With the win, EMU improves to 22-23 overall and 11-7 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ball State drops to 22-22 (13-5 MAC) with the loss.

Prior to this weekend, the Eagles scored just eight runs total over a five-game stretch. This weekend versus Ball State, the EMU offense tallied 33 runs on 43 hits in three games.

The Eagles are back in action next weekend, May 7-9, when they head to DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois University.
