Eagles fall to Broncos in close MAC matchup

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to remain perfect at home this season as it lost, 4-3, to the Broncos of Western Michigan University in a Mid-American Conference showdown at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Friday, April 9.

Despite dropping all three doubles matches to start the day, the Eagles (6-11, 0-4 MAC) battled to draw even at 2-2, with Xu Chang and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr earning singles victories. With Eastern trailing 3-2 and two matches remaining, the home team needed to win both points to earn the victory. But Western would pull out the decisive point as Maria Nivia defeated Marcela Rivero, 6-2, 6-3, to secure a Bronco win.

Even though WMU (11-9, 3-1 MAC) already had the match in hand, freshman standout Julia Breuss still fought hard to earn an impressive three-set victory over Western's Emily Dudzik. She would get the win 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (8).

“We had a strong effort at our top singles positions today,” said Eagle's Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Doubles intensity was up and down and we need to work at a steadier energy level throughout, whether we're winning or losing. Miriam and Chang won convincingly, and Julia really fought hard for her win today. Now we have to be ready to move on and give the same effort or better tomorrow. We need to rest up so we can be mentally prepared to come out and get a win against Bowling Green.”

Eastern has a very short turnaround, as it takes the court less than 24 hours from now for another home bout against Bowling Green State University. The match starts at 1 p.m.
