Senior point guard Carlos Medlock wins Grant Long MVP Award
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team put the finishing touches on the 2009-10 season announcing individual award winners at the annual awards ceremony held Thursday, April 8, in the atrium of the Convocation Center.
Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey and his staff selected seven individuals and one manager for awards. In addition, there were four statistical awards presented.
The Grant Long Most Valuable Player Award was earned by senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) while the Earle Higgins Leadership Award was presented to senior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville).
Redshirt junior Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton) was the recipient of the team's Earl Boykins Defensive Player of the Year Award for the second consecutive season and sophomore guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) was awarded the Jack Brusewitz Hustle and Spirit Award.
The Harold Simons Most Improved Player Award went to freshman Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) while the Dan Hoff Scholar-Athlete Award was shared by junior Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough C.C.) along with freshman J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Nelson Snider).
Manager Dustin Daniels was the recipient of the Andy Herold Manager of the Year Award for his outstanding efforts as a team manager.
Individual statistical awards were presented to three players. Medlock won both the free throw percentage award (80.5 %) and the assist award (121) while Dobbins was the leader in field-goal percentage at 60.2 percent after hitting120-of-195 shots. Redshirt junior Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor, Mich.-Truman) was the rebound leader at 10.0 per game.
In addition to the individual awards, EMU head coach Charles E. Ramsey announced that 15 players earned letters for the 2009-10 season. The letterwinners, in addition to Bowdry, Cooper, Dobbins, Green, Harris, Higgins, Medlock and Sims are: Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino), Quintin Dailey (Las Vegas, Nev.-Bishop Gorman-Sheridan (Wyo.) J.C.), Jake Fosdick (Saline, Mich.-Saline), L.J. Frazier (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) and Kamil Janton (Tarnow, Poland-Chicago (Ill.) Bartlett).
The 2009-10 Eagles finished the season with a 17-15 overall record and an 8-8 Mid-American Conference mark, good for a tie for second in the West Division. That 17-15 mark was the best for an EMU men's team since the 1997-98 squad posted a 20-10 overall mark and was the Eagles' first winning season since 1999-2000. EMU won its first-round game in the 2010 FirstEnergy MAC Tournament before bowing to Akron in a double-overtime thriller in the quarterfinal round.
