YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—
On a brisk spring afternoon turned evening, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team bounced back from a game one loss to earn a doubleheader split with Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University Friday, April 23, at Oestrike Stadium.

WMU took game one, 5-3, despite a complete game from junior Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London). The Eagles responded with a strong pitching performance in game two en route to a 3-1 victory.

The Eagles (20-19; 9-5 MAC) have won six of their last seven contests while the Broncos move to 10-28 overall and 4-10 in the MAC.

Eastern pitching struck out 19 batters over the two game set while surrendering only seven walks.

In game one, the Eagles fell behind 5-1 after six innings and were unable to claw back despite getting as close as 5-3 and threatening to tie the game in the final inning.

Chaffins pitched a complete nine innings in a losing effort to fall to 3-4 on the season while improving his MAC-leading strikeout total to 69 with 10 on the day. The right-hander began the game by using just eight pitches to get through the first inning and striking out the side in the second.

Senior Aaron Crooks (Toledo, Ohio-Ottawa Hills) paced the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Broncos starter Casey Weber went 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits to improve his record to 3-2. Troy Forton earned his first save of the season.

The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when a leadoff single by WMU's Jack Scanlon gave way to Tim Cross, who sent a no-doubter over the left field wall to put the Broncos ahead, 2-0.

Eastern Michigan cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) led off with a sharp double down the right field line. An Ohrman sacrifice fly scored Magsig for the first EMU run of the contest.

Chaffins pitched himself into trouble again in the sixth as WMU went ahead, 3-1, on a Chris Lewis single to left to put two runners on base with no outs. Jack Scanlon made it a 5-1 Bronco lead with a single over the head of Chaffins and into center field to score both baserunners.

Crooks led off the eighth inning with a double and came around to score as junior Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.) reached base on an error by second baseman Zach Thoma to cut the Bronco lead to 5-2.

Then with two outs in the ninth, Crooks came through again with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game. It would prove to be too little too late, however, as WMU prevailed, 5-3.

In game two, freshman Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) departed after 4.1 innings, in which he allowed an earned run with five strikeouts. Sophomore Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Toronto Schools) came on in relief to throw 2.1 scoreless innings en route to his second win of the season (2-4). Junior Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) also pitched 2.1 innings to earn his third save of the year.

Senior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) went 1-for-4 in the second game with a game-winning pair of RBI. Leonard went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

For the Broncos, Casey Hall took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year.

Kyle Galbraith opened the scoring in the third inning when he stroked an RBI single into center field for a 1-0 Bronco lead.

Then in the fourth, Magsig tallied his third hit of the day with a double to right center to put runners on second and third with one out. Marshall then hit a two-RBI bullet to center field to give the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon, 2-1.

With runners on the corners and one out in the sixth, Glover induced a crucial double play off the bat of Isaac Avila to preserve the one-run lead.

EMU had a chance to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and two down, but a Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) fly ball fell short at the warning track to keep the score 2-1.

Junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) reached base on a costly lead-off walk issued by Broncos hurler Billy Morrison. True freshman Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) made Morrison pay with an RBI single to left field to score Leonard and put extend the EMU lead to 3-1.

Combs shut the door with a one-two-three ninth inning to give the Eagles the doubleheader split.

Head Coach Jay Alexander's squad will square off with WMU in rubber match of the series Saturday, April 24, at 1 p.m. Sophomore Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) is expected to get the nod on the hill for the Eagles, while WMU right handed pitcher Eric Heckaman will start for the Broncos.
