ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team won its first game of a four-game road swing Wednesday afternoon, April 14, at OU Baseball Field in Rochester, Mich., as the Eagles connected on four home runs to register an 11-1 win over the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies.
With the victory, Eastern Michigan improves to 15-18 on the year. Oakland falls to 5-20 with the loss.
Freshman right hander Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton) picked up his second victory of the season in the contest, as he went five innings, giving up one run on four hits, while fanning five Oakland batters.
The EMU offense was lifted by home runs from juniors Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.), Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) and senior Andrew Marshall (Mason, Mich.-Mason) in the victory.
Sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) finished 2-for-5 with one run scored in the win.
The Eagles got off to a quick start, as Kinder belted a leadoff solo home run over the centerfield fence in the top of the first to help EMU claim an early 1-0 advantage.
But the Grizzlies answered in the bottom of the third inning, as a one-out triple by Tim Ryan, followed by an RBI single by John Estes, helped make it a 1-1 game.
EMU capitalized on an OU error to reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth, as junior Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) reached on an error to plate Marshall and make it a 2-1 game. The Eagles tacked on five more runs an inning later off a pair of Oakland miscues and a two-run homer by Marshall to take a 7-1 lead.
It was all EMU from there, as junior Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne), freshman Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) and sophomore Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Ontario Schools) pitched four innings of shutout baseball and allowed just two hits down the stretch to help the Eagles leave with the win.
The Eagles are back in action Friday, April 16, when they begin a three-game set with the University of Akron Zips at Lee Jackson Field in Akron, Ohio. Game one is slated for 3 p.m., while games two and three on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
