Key injuries hamper Eagles during West Coast roadie

LONG BEACH, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) — Sophomore Miriam Westerink managed the only point for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team as it fell, 6-1, to No. 46 Long Beach State University, Thursday afternoon, March 4, in Long Beach, Calif.

Westerink won her match over Anais Dallara in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The Eagles managed to contend in other matches as Marcela Rivero took the 49ers' Anna Jeczmionka to the brink in a three set thriller, but was unable to earn the win, falling 6-3, 4-6 and 10-4.

The Eagles, who are in the midst of a week-long California road trip, were without one of its top singles players, Julia Breuss. Breuss suffered an injury during a practice earlier in the week.

“Despite having two players out of the lineup with injury, I think we had some better efforts in singles today,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. Our doubles intensity really needs to improve as we move forward, but overall I think our focus and performance was better than it was in Tuesday's match.”

The team will wrap up its road trip March 5 against Loyola Marymount.
