Eastern wins five of six singles matches over Duquesne

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—In the first ever meeting between the Eastern Michigan University and Duquesne University tennis squads, the Eagles captured the final two matches to secure a 5-2 victory, Saturday, March 20, at the Chippewa Racquet Club in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Dukes took the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches to go ahead, 1-0, but EMU was unwavering in its attempt to remain perfect at home, as Julia Breuss, Miriam Westerink, and Xu Chang took the next three singles matches to storm ahead 3-1.

Eastern's lone hiccup in singles play was a 6-2, 6-2 setback by #Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr#. Karina Ahuja and Celine Donnet wrapped won the final matches of the day for EMU.

“Duquesne had a long match last night against Bowling Green and a tough turnaround today,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “I thought Duquesne came out ready play. I think that our ladies did a nice job of commanding some of the sets.

“We got out to a great start after that by winning five of the first six sets, especially changing momentum after losing a doubles point. It gives us some confidence. A lot of players have been playing with nagging injuries and anytime you can fight through that and get some wins it'll help moving forward.”

Despite the injuries, the Eagles will take the courts in less than 24 hours when the team heads to Lansing, Mich. for a noon battle match with the Spartans of Michigan State University.
