Xu Chang beats No. 71 Aguilar in the process
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team was unable to start its West Coast road trip on a positive note as it fell to No. 42 San Diego State University, 6-1, at the Aztec Tennis Center, Tuesday, March 2, in San Diego, Calif.
After falling in all three doubles contests, EMU only managed one win against the Aztecs in singles competition. Xu Chang was able to pull out the upset victory over No. 71 Alicia Aguilar. After taking the first set 7-6 (7), Xu couldn't close the match out, allowing Aguilar to even things up with a 4-6 set loss. But in the decisive frame, Xu did not let up and pressed on to a 12-10, match-clinching win.
The Eagles will continue their week-long road California trip with a Thursday, March 4, match against No. 51 Long Beach State University.
"I thought Miriam and Chang competed pretty well today," said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. "However, as a whole, we have to compete better mentally. We had a tough break yesterday losing Julia Breuss to an injury in practice, which makes things more difficult for us, but we still need to find a way to overcome and focus better in matches."
