48TH ANNUAL MIDLANDS: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will compete in the 48th running of the Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern University Wed.-Thurs., Dec. 29-30, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. Ten Eagles will take on some of the top wrestlers in the nation in an event that routinely shapes up to be a precursor to the NCAA Championships in March.
“The Midlands is a very deep field with many of the top teams in the country,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “It is also a great opportunity for us to see the teams we don't normally run into during the regular season.
“I think if you can place at the Midlands it is a preview of what your potential is for the postseason.”
It will be the Eagles' second trip to Evanston this season as they fell to the No. 9 Wildcats, 34-3, in a dual back on Dec. 12. It is also their first trip back to Midlands since 2008 where they went a combined 15-20 to take 23rd place.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles came up short, Dec. 19, at the Indiana Duals their last time out despite six individual victories on the day. EMU endured a hard-fought battle to host Indiana which it was tied with at 13-13 through seven matches, but in the end the Hoosiers prevailed with a 24-13 win.
In their other dual against No. 24 Missouri, the Tigers were just too much to overcome as they ran away with a 32-6 victory.
MID-SEASON ASSESSMENT: The Eagles, who are 3-4 in duals this season, have struggled to stay healthy for the first half of the year. The holiday break comes at an opportune time as it can be used to heal up a battered lineup that has forced Coach DelPorto to mix up his starters for this week's Midlands Championships.
“We have been very unlucky as far as injuries go,” DelPorto said. “Coming into the season we were very deep and now we are a little thin.
“The Christmas break couldn't have come at a better time. We need some of this time to heal up and get ready to go in 2011. I believe if we can get healthy, it will be a fun second semester.”
HEADING TO MIDLANDS: With injuries piling up, the starting lineup will to look a little bit different this week as the Eagles head to the highly competitive Midlands Championships.
Making the trip to Evanston will be: Jared Germaine, Mike LeHolm, Seth Schaner, Lester France, Corey Phillips, Aaron Sulzer, Nick Hendrick, Chris Eggert, Wes Schroeder and David Wade.
LISTEN AND WATCH: Live radio coverage of the Midlands is available courtesy of Takedown Radio. A television broadcast of the championship matches will air on tape delay on the Big Ten Network, with the debut coming at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 8 and a re-air scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 14. The Big Ten Network's Tim Johnson will handle the play-by-play duties for the broadcast with NU volunteer assistant coach and current World Team member Jake Herbert providing color analysis.
THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.
EMU RANKED 20TH-NATIONALLY IN APR RANKINGS: Eastern Michigan University's wrestling program is tied with Pittsburgh and Princeton in the annual Academic Performance Ratings (APR) as released by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's June Issue. It's a new program-best for the Eagle grapplers. EMU ranks ahead of all Mid-American Conference institutions in the highly-regarded poll including Northern Illinois (29th), Buffalo (44th), Kent State (47th), Central Michigan (60th) and Ohio (67th).
