Eagles stingy defense and fast-break offense too much for Marygrove

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team made the most of its only preseason exhibition game of the year cruising to a 100-56 win over a visiting Marygrove College team here Saturday, Nov. 6, afternoon in the Convocation Center.
Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey's Eagles combined a stingy defense with some deadly shooting in their lone exhibition outing. Eastern is slated to open the regular season Friday, Nov. 12, at Michigan State.
The Eagles had seven players in double figures with sophomore center Matt Balkema (Warren, Mich.-Cousino) turning in a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) added 16 points and eight rebounds. Other EMU players in double figures were senior wing Will Cooper (Detroit, Mich.-Pershing-Bridgton Academy) with 15, sophomore forward forward Kenny Stewart (Williamsport, Pa.-Notre Dame-Weatherford C.C.) with 14, junior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) with 13, senior forward Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG-Hillsborough C.C.) with 11 and junior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) added 10.
The Eagles made 37-of-65 field goals for 56.9 percent while holding Marygrove to just 32.8 percent on 22-of-67 shooting. Eastern also won the rebound battle, 47-32, and also forced 24 turnovers.
Marygrove was paced by senior forward Justin McKinney with 13 points while junior guard Chris Sinagoga added 10.
Marygrove opened the game with a quick 2-0 lead on a layup by Marcus Hopkins and after trading baskets for the first four minutes the Eagles took control with a 12-8 lead at the 15:53 mark on a three-point field goal by Green.
Eastern managed to quickly raise its lead to 11 points, 30-19, on a jumper by Lampley with 8:41 left in the first half.
The EMU defense would then center stage, holding Marygrove scoreless over the final 7:38 of the first stanza while building its advantage to 31, 52-21, at halftime. Eastern would force 16 first-half turnovers by the Mustangs. Marygrove made just 9-of-26 field goals for 34.6 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The home squad shot 58.8 percent in the first half on 20-of-34 from the field and also connected on 5-of-12 three pointers while also holding a 21-14 rebound edge.
Eastern would keep that defensive pressure on in the early stages of the second half, scoring five unanswered points for a 57-21 lead before Michael Jackson stopped the bleeding with a jumper at the 17:30 mark.
The Eagles would go on to build a 40+ lead before recording the 100-56 win.
EMU's first regular-season game at Michigan State next Friday is set for an 8:30 p.m. start.
