EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Michigan State University built an early lead and Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team could not make up the difference in a 96-66 loss to the No. 2 ranked Spartans here Friday, Nov.12, in men's basketball action before a sold-out crowd of 14,797 in the Breslin Center. The game was the 2010-11 season opener for both squads.

The Spartans led at the half, 49-33, and out-scored the Eagles, 47-33, over the final 20 minutes to post the victory.

Senior forward Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) led the Eagles with a career-best 32 points, including making a career-high five three-point field goals and tying his career-best for rebounds with 15. The double-double was Bowdry's 24th of his career. Junior guard Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) was the only other Eagle in double figures with 12 points.

Michigan State had six players in double figures, led by Kalin Lucas with 18, while Durrell Summers added 17, Keith Appling 14, Draymond Green 12, while Adreian Payne and Austin Thornton added 10 each.

Michigan State shot 52.5 percent from the field on 31-of-59 field goals and made 28-of-42 free throws for 66.7 percent. EMU connected on 24-of-76 field goals for 31.6 percent and just 7-of-18 free throws for 38.9 percent. The Eagles made 11-of-29 three-point field goals for 37.9 percent.

The Spartans scored the first basket of the game on a layup by Garrick Sherman but the Eagles answered on a basket by Higgins.

The two teams traded buckets through the next three minutes before Bowdry got EMU back within one, 7-6, on a three-point field goal at the 18:46 mark.

MSU would use some timely shooting and a few big EMU misses to slowly build a double-digit lead, making it 31-15, at the 9:32 mark on two Lucas free throws.

The Eagles would not give in, however, and managed to get it back to a 13-point deficit, 46-33, on a basket by Bowdry with 1:12 left in the half.

State would go on to close out the first 20 minutes with a 49-33 lead.

Bowdry led the Eagles in the first half with 16 points while Lucas had 15. The Eagles shot just 32.5 percent from the field in the first half, making just 13-of-40 shots while MSU made 17-of-31 for 54.8 percent.

Bowdry opened the second half by hitting the second of two free throws, but State would answer with a long triple from Summers. Bowdry came right back with a three of his own to cut the lead to 52-37 at the 18:22 mark.

Michigan State would go to the long ball in the second half, making four in the first eight minutes to build a 73-45 lead with 11:35 remaining and kept a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

The Eagles will be idle until hosting Madonna University in a Wednesday, Nov. 17, noon matinee contest in the Convocation Cednter. The game will be Education Day with several local grade schools attending as special guests of EMU.
