YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was as even a match as one could expect between the fourth and fifth seeded teams in 2010 Mid-American Conference Tournament Quarterfinals and it came all the way down to penalty kicks as Western Michigan University advanced past host Eastern Michigan University, 4-2, in the shootout. The No. 5-seeded Broncos move on to play top-seeded Toledo in one of two MAC Semifinal matches next Friday, Nov. 5.

The Eagles were outshot 18-10 in the match while both squads recorded six corner kicks apiece. With the tie, EMU sees its season come to an unexpected end at 9-7-5 overall while WMU continues on, moving its record to 9-6-5.

In the shootout, Eastern Michigan led things off with Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) finding the net with a strike into the upper left corner of the goal. Western Michigan's Nicole Dulyea answered to tie things up at 1-apiece.

In the second round, Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead in the shootout, but it would be short-lived. WMU's Stephanie Skowneski answered with a neatly placed shot into the upper right corner of the goal before Bronco goalkeeper Julia Francy stepped into the spotlight.

The senior stopped back-to-back shots as EMU's Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-North) and Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) were turned aside. Western then saw Kelsey Baskins and Anina Cicerone convert each of their opportunities for the Broncos, claiming a victory in the shootout.

EMU goalie Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) weathered several WMU opportunities in regulation and both overtime sessions, turning away seven shots on goal for her seventh shutout of the season. The senior finishes her career with the EMU record for career saves at 387 and the single-season mark with 146 saves. Her 23 career shutouts is second all-time only to Sarah Willis' ('00) 24.

Both teams traded a pair of shot opportunities in the overtime sessions with EMU tallying two shots in the first overtime. Sheridan had a shot turned away as the Eagles saw a prime chance go for naught.

The Eagles locked the ball down into the Broncos zone early on, recording four corner kicks and five shots (4 on goal) in the first 13 minutes of action. WMU held a 12-1 shots advantage in the second half while Francy made six saves for the visiting Broncos for her fifth shutout of the season.

Western Michigan was the lone upset of the day among MAC Quarterfinals matches. Top-seeded Toledo will host the semifinals and final next Friday and Sunday, Nov. 5-7. Joining the Broncos and Rockets is No. 3 Central Michigan and No. 2 Miami.
