YPSILANTI, Mich.  (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team fell just short in its home opener Saturday, Jan. 30, at Bowen Field House, as the Central Michigan University Chippewas downed the Eagles, 192.975-191.575, in a Mid-American Conference match-up.

The loss drops EMU's record to 0-2 overall and in the MAC, while CMU improves to 4-1 (1-0 MAC) with the win.

The Eagles managed to out-score the Chippewas on the balance beam, 48.350-47.100, but fell in every other event to take the loss.

True freshman Kaylyn Millick (Washington, Pa.-Trinity) tallied EMU's highest score of the meet, as her 9.775 on the balance beam was good for second overall behind CMU's Britney Taylor, who carded a 9.825 in the event. Millick also tallied scores of 9.675 (vault), 9.600 (beam), and 8.875 (floor exercise) to finish with an all-around score of 37.925 for the Eagles.

Senior Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) tallied the Eagles' highest all-around score of the competition, as she finished third overall behind CMU's Katie Simon (38.900) and Taylor (39.025) with an all-around score of 38.650. Grigg carded consistent scores in every event, including a 9.750 on the vault, 9.550 on the bars, 9.625 on the beam, and a 9.725 in the floor exercise.

Junior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) was the only Eagle other than Grigg and Millick to finish in the top three in any event, as her 9.675 on the balance beam was good for third place, finishing just behind Millick and CMU's Taylor. Viltz also carded a 9.475 on the vault and an 8.725 in the floor exercise.

Junior balance beam specialist Grace Crouch (Bellbrook, Ohio-Bellbrook) had a stellar performance in her event, as her 9.650 was good for fourth overall in the competition.

Sophomore Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ontario-Brantford Collegiate Institute) posted solid marks in a pair of events for the Eagles, carding a 9.675 on the bars and 9.575 in the floor exercise to finish fifth and eighth, respectively.

Freshman Brittany Cassar (Kings Park, N.Y.-Kings Park) tallied a 9.625 on the beam in the loss for the Eagles, while sophomore Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) registered scores of 9.525 on the bars and a 9.725 in the floor exercise.

The Eagles are back in action next week, Feb. 7, when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the 18th Annual State of Michigan Classic, hosted by Western Michigan University. EMU will take on WMU, CMU, and Michigan State University in the competition. Last year's champions from the University of Michigan will not compete in the event.
