YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After leading the game for nearly 37 minutes by as many as 13 points, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team couldn't hang on for the win in a 64-61 cross-divisional Mid-American Conference loss to Bowling Green State University here at the Convocation Center, Wednesday, Jan. 27. EMU dropped to 10-9 (2-4 MAC), while BGSU improved to 10-8 (3-3 MAC).
The visitors went on a 14-0 run late in the game to rally from a 53-48 deficit to take a six-point lead, 60-56, with just 1:16 left in the game.
BG held a three-point lead, 64-61, with five seconds left in the game, but the Falcons missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw, with Eastern's Antonio Green (Inkster, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud) grabbing the rebound to give the Eagles one last chance at the win.
Senior point guard Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) then raced down court, but his attempt was short at the buzzer as BGSU held on for the victory.
After shooting 60 percent in the first half while racing to a 37-28 halftime advantage, the Eagles made just 8-of-28 second half field goals for 28.6 percent while Bowling Green would shoot 53.8 percent in the second half on 14-of-26 shooting to record the come-from-behind win
.
Eastern had just two players in double figures with senior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) leading the way with 17 while Medlock added 16.
Bowling Green had four players in double figures led by Scott Thomas with 18, while Erik Marschall, Otis Polk and Jordan Crawford all adding 10 points each.
The Eagles jumped out to a 16-3 lead to start the game on the hot hands of Dobbins and junior college transfer Jay Higgins (Fayetteville, N.C.-IMG Academy-Hillsborough (Fla.) C.C.). The duo scored 12 of the squad's first 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including two Higgins' three-pointers.
Eastern would shoot 60 percent from the field as a team, 15-of-25, en route to a 37-28 halftime advantage. Dobbins finished the first stanza with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, while Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) added eight points and six rebounds, and Medlock added eight points and three rebounds.
After leading 53-46 with 7:10 left in the game, BG's Scott Thomas hit back-to-back contested three-pointers in the midst of the run to take its first lead, 55-53, with 3:09 left in the game. The Eagles fell down by seven points, 60-53, before breaking a nearly six minute scoring drought after Green nailed a three-pointer from the corner with 1:13 left in the contest, pulling Eastern to within four, 60-56.
EMU, however, was unable to regain its hot shooting hand from the first half, but managed to bring the game to as close to two points after a late three pointer and a pair of Medlock free throws. The Falcons used solid free throw shooting down the stretch to ice the victory and close out an 18-8 scoring run to end the game.
EMU will next travel to Miami, Ohio, Jan. 30, to take on the RedHawks in the second of six straight cross-divisional. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU and tip time is slated for noon.
