CLASH AT THE CONVO: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will host Clarion University Friday evening, Jan. 15, at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The bout will mark the first of six home events for EMU in 2010 and first of two matches at the Convocation Center.
TWO OF A KIND: The Eagles and Golden Eagles have become mainstays on each other's schedules in recent years, with EMU holding a 2-1-1 series advantage since the 2005-06 season. However, Clarion has not lost to the “Men from Ypsilanti” since Feb. 9, 2007, when EMU won, 20-15, in Clarion, Pa. Last season, the Eagles suffered a 21-12 road setback to the Golden Eagles, Nov. 21, 2008.
“Clarion's program has a great coach in Teague Moore who is a friend of mine,” remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “That program reminds me of our program in its growth and improvement.”
THREE'S A CROWD: Following Friday's tussle with Clarion, the Eagles will travel north to East Lansing, Mich. for the second time this season Saturday, Jan. 16, for the Spartan Duals. EMU will step onto the mat to face Rutgers University at 11 a.m., University of Findlay at 1 p.m., and Stanford University at 3 p.m. Earlier this season, EMU competed at the MSU Open, Nov. 15.
“Rutgers and Stanford are much improved and have been mentioned as top 25 teams throughout the season,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Findlay is the No. 15 division II team and we certainly won't take those guys lightly.”
A WEEKEND WELL SPENT: EMU made the most of its Pennsylvania road swing last weekend, posting a 3-1 record over four duals to improve to 6-4-1 on the season. At Seton Hill, Jan. 8, the Eagles roared past the Griffins, 30-9. Five Eagles, sophomores Jordan McGuire, Lester France, and Wes Schroeder, as well as freshmen Alex Ortman, Travis Stanback, each won their first regular season matches of the year.
The following day, Jan. 9, the Green and White suffered an opening round setback at the Pitt Quad to No. 25 ranked University of Pittsburgh, 25-13, but rebounded nicely to topple Waynesburg University, 35-10, and Columbia College, 21-18.
SULZER SIZZLING IN DUALS: Freshman Aaron Sulzer was the only Eagle to claim victories in all three matches Saturday at Pittsburgh. Sulzer is on a four-match winning streak in dual competition dating back to Dec. 12 against SIU Edwardsville and is 7-2 in regular season bouts this season (12-7 overall). The Cleveland, Ohio native notched major decisions over Pittsburgh's Mark Powell and Waynesburg's Alex Evanoff, and bested Matt Dunn of Columbia at 157 lbs.
In addition, senior Sean Clair posted a 2-0 record at the event with a 2-0 shutout of Pittsburgh's Jimmy Conroy and a pin of Columbia's Andrew Grabfelder at the 2:03 mark of the 133 lbs. bout.
JUST AROUND THE CORNER: Mid-American Conference matches get underway Thursday, Jan. 21, when the Eagles take-on defending MAC Champion Central Michigan University at Bowen Field House. It will be the first of four home conference bouts for the Eagles in 2009-10.
“This weekend is very important for our team,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Wrestling is a momentum sport in most cases. CMU is our first MAC dual and they are as tough as any team in the country. We need to have a bunch of confidence going into that match.
