Wrestling Completes Road Swing with Pair of Wins at Pitt Quad

Eagles improve to 6-4-1 on the season as they head back to Ypsilanti
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (EMUEAGLES.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team finished its Pennsylvania road trip with a 2-1 record Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Pitt Quad. The Eagles dropped their opening match, 25-13, to No. 25 University of Pittsburgh, but rallied to take the final two matches against Waynesburg University and Columbia College, 36-11, and, 21-18, respectively. EMU's season record improves to 6-4-1.
The Green and White started the day against Pittsburgh where the No. 25 ranked Panthers handed EMU a 25-13 setback. Pennsylvania native senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum), freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) and senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) were the only Eagle grapplers to earn victories in the match.
Clair knotted the team score at three apiece when he shutout Jimmy Conroy, 2-0, at 133 lbs. With EMU trailing, 12-3, Sulzer won an 11-2 major decision over Mark Powell to make the score 12-7. Brandel followed up that performance with a swift pin of Karl Deciantis at the 1:03 mark of the 165 lbs. bout to give EMU its first and only lead of the bout, 13-12.
The Panthers went on to claim the final four individual matches and the dual, 25-13.
In round two, the Eagles stormed back with an eight-win performance to topple Waynesburg, 36-11. Following a loss for true freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) at 125 lbs., EMU rattled-off six straight victories which were highlighted by a pin for sophomore Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-Huron) over Chris Mullins at the 6:56 mark of the 133 lbs. match, as well as an 18-0 technical fall for sophomore J.J. Johnson (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) over Abdul Yusuff at 149 lbs. The Eagles were ahead, 25-5, after seven bouts.
Following a loss for true freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) at 184 lbs., senior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) (197 lbs.) and sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Manitou Beach) (heavyweight) capped-off the match with a pin (2:43) and major decision, respectively.
In the final contest of the day against Columbia, the two teams fought a close battle until the end with the Eagles nudging their way past the Lions, 21-18. Each team claimed five victories in the bout, with Clair (133 lbs.), sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) (141 lbs.), Sulzer (157 lbs.), junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) (174 lbs.), and junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) recording the wins for EMU.
The Eagles now return home for the first time in more than a month to Convocation Center for a Friday, Jan. 15, tilt with Clarion University. Action is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
