CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (10-25, 16-25, 25-16, 17-25) decison to Sacramento State University in the second round of the DePaul Invitational Saturday morning, Sept. 19, here at McGrath Arena. The Hornets were paced by Maddison Thivierge and Eryn Kirby, who combined for 30 kills and a .444 hitting percentage in the victory.
With the win, Sacramento State improved to 6-6 overall, while Eastern Michigan dropped to 0-2 at the tournament and 1-12 overall.
The Green and White were led by junior Jennifer Swartz's (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) 11 kills as redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Vincek (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) and true freshman Carolyn Steger (Wexford, Pa.-Pine Richland) eached notched six put-a-ways. Sophomore Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monore St. Mary's Catholic Central) tallied 23 kills defensively.
Thivierge finished the match with 15 kills and match-highs in both hitting percentage (.464) and blocks (4) for Sacarmento State. Kirby, who was making her second start of the season on the right side, posted a season-high 15 kills and a career-high .423 hitting percentage.
Thivierge, Kirby and Currey (9) combined for 39 of Sacramento State's 52 kills as the Hornets finished the match with 15 more kills than Eastern Michigan (37).
