AKRON, Ohio-The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team scored 50 points of its 53 total points on the third and final day of the 2009 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship, May 16, at Lee Jackson Field, to finish eighth. The University of Akron won the meet for the fourth consecutive year with 147 points, followed by Kent State (106.5), Western Michigan (103), Miami (95.5), Ohio (73), Ball State (62.5), Buffalo (61), Eastern Michigan (53), Bowling Green (43), Central Michigan (37.5), Toledo (27) and Northern Illinois (10).
Sophomore Beverly Elcock (Ft. Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) picked up the Eagles' lone victory as she edged out Larisa Arcip of Akron for the win. Elcock went out fast in the first lap of the race before the lead pack caught up and as they entered the home stretch, Elcock who sat in fourth place fought her way up to catch Arcip and win with a time of 2:09.67. Junior Jasmine Gates (Virginia Beach, Va.-Tallwood) cleared 5-07.25 in the high jump, finishing second for the silver medal.
Elcock teamed up with Shantavia Williams (Homestead, Fla-South Dade), Shade St. Louis (Kansas City, Mo.-Kansas City CC) and Christina Farrow (Detroit, Mich.-Renaissance) to add another eight points to the Eagles' total by finishing second in the 4x400-meter relay, running 3:46.44.
In the sprints, the Eagle freshmen placed well in each event. ReJeana Marigna (Beverly, N.J.-Burlington County Tech.) ran a season and career-best mark of 11.93 to finish just out of medal range, fourth, in the 100-meter dash. In the 200, Marigna ran 24.86 seconds to place seventh. In the 400-meter dash, Williams and St. Louis finished 4-5, running times of 55.43 and 55.72, respectively. In the 400-meter hurdles, Dejaa Shearer (Canton, Ohio-Glen Oak) ran perhaps one of the toughest races, as a torrential downpair encompased the area during the race, but she still managed to run 1:03.88 to place sixth.
In the shoter relay, the 4x100, Williams and Marigna paired up with Ashley Wartley (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) and Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) to record a fourth-place finish, running 46.57.
Elcock, Gates and Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) will compete for the Eagles at the NCAA Mideast Regional May 29-30 at the University of Louisville.
