EMU will face LaTech, March 6-8, in Ruston, La.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Coming off an impressive 10-6 victory at Indiana University earlier this week, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team now heads to Ruston, La. for its first ever meeting with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, March 6-8, at J.C. Love Field.
Senior Sean Hoffman (Midland, Mich.-Midland) will get the start on the mound for EMU in game one, while junior right-handed pitcher John Anderson will get the nod for the Bulldogs.
INDIANA RECAP: EMU spoiled Indiana's home opener Wednesday afternoon, March 4, at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind., as the Eagles claimed a 10-6 victory over the Hoosiers. The EMU offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to help freshman pitcher Jordan Glover pick up his first collegiate victory.
LOOKING AHEAD: After claiming a 10-6 win over Indiana, the Eagles now head to Ruston, La. for their first ever meeting with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, March 6-8. The Bulldogs have lost three games in a row and stand with a 4-3 record this season. Senior Sean Hoffman will start game one for EMU, while sophomore Jordan Goldschmidt and freshman Kendall Lewis are the probable starters for games two and three this weekend. After a three-game set with LaTech, the Eagles head to Dayton, Ohio for games against the University of Dayton, Wright State University and Oakland University, March 13-15. The Eagles take on the Dayton Flyers, March 13, at 3 p.m.
STREAK SNAPPED: EMU sophomore third baseman Zack Leonard had his 13-game hit streak snapped in game two against Georgia State, as Leonard finished 0-for-1 with one walk. Leonard has still managed to reach base safely in EMU's last 15 games dating back to game one of last year's Mid-American Conference Tournament.
SAVE THE DATE: Originally scheduled for March 24 against the University of Michigan, the EMU baseball team will play its home opener March 18 against the Spartans of Michigan State University. The Spartans are under the tutledge of head coach Jake Boss Jr., who coached EMU to a MAC West Division and MAC Tournament title last season.
USING THE LONGBALL: A large portion of EMU's runs last week came courtesy of the home run, as Johnny Crooks, Zack Leonard, Kyle Rhoad, Aaron Powell and Matt Skirving each tallied their first home runs of the season against Florida and Georgia State. Crooks' grand slam against Florida was his first collegiate hit.
GOING STREAKING: Freshman Brent Ohrman has hit safely in EMU's last six games, batting .444 (8-for-18) with four runs and three RBI. On the year, Ohrman is batting .310 with a .345 slugging percentage.
