Sophomore earns first conference scholar athlete award
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Eastern Michigan University sophomore third baseman Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 8. This marks Leonard's first career conference scholar athlete award.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Leonard, who carries a 3.75 GPA in exercise science, had a solid week for the Eagles, as he went 6-for-17 (.353) at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and four RBI. Leonard has reached base safely in 11 of 12 games so far this season and leads the team with a .420 batting average.
Eastern Michigan is looking to rebound after being swept last weekend by Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., as the Eagles head to Dayton, Ohio this weekend for the University of Dayton/Wright State University Tournament, March 13-15. The Eagles open up the tournament Friday, March 13, with a 3 p.m. match-up with the University of Dayton Flyers at Time Warner Cable Stadium.
