Men's Basketball Falls to Akron

YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell behind early and could not catch up, falling to the University of Akron Zips, 78-41, here Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Convocation Center.

The game marked the return of EMU Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey, who had missed the previous three contests with a benign case of vertigo.

With the loss, EMU falls to 3-19 (1-7 MAC) on the year while Akron improves to 14-8 (5-3 MAC). The Eagles went scoreless for almost eight minutes in the first half, falling into a hole they could not climb out of.

EMU was led by redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) with 12 points while Akron had four players reach double figures with Nate Linhart and Darryl Roberts leading the way with 13 each. The Eagles struggled offensively, shooting just 33 percent (16-of-49) while Akron shot 46 percent (27-of-59).

The Eagles came out of the gate strong, taking a 5-2 lead just over two minutes into the contest. The Zips then rattled off 16 unanswered points, forcing an Eagle time out with 11:52 remaining. After going almost eight minutes without scoring, Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) ended the drought for the Eagles with a runner in the lane, making it 23-7 in favor of the Zips.

Akron went to the break with a 41-18 lead. The Zips were hot from beyond the arc, connecting on 6-of-14 trey attempts, compared to just 1-of-3 for EMU. Branden Harrison (Houston, Texas-Milby) and Gay led the Eagles in the first half with four points each at the intermission. The Eagles were plagued by foul trouble in the first frame, as they were whistled for 14 fouls with three players registering three fouls apiece.

EMU is back in action Saturday, Feb. 7, when the Eagles travel to Athens, Ohio to take on the Ohio University Bobcats. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
