Eagles Wrap Up Day One of MAC Championship

Eagles fifth after two events are scored
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team wrapped up day one of the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship Wednesday evening, Feb. 27, on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The Eagles sit in fifth place at the end of day one, accumulating 56 points. Miami University leads with 74 points. Toledo, Buffalo and Ohio all sit in second, tied for 64 points, followed by EMU (56), Bowling Green (54), Akron (52) and Ball State (44).
With just two events held on day one of the competition, the Eagles placed easily in both races. In the 200-yard medley, the relay team of Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow), Ashley Durand (Lincoln, Neb.-Southeast), Sam Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) and Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown), placed sixth with a time of 1:44.33.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Hannah Burandt (Parma, Ohio-Parma), Kowalski, Alissa Ricard (Tucson, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) and Steph Cholyk (Aurora, Ont.-Aurora) teamed up to record a fourth place showing, finishing with a time of 7:19.19.
Action at Cooper Pool will resume Thursday, Feb. 26, with the swimming preliminaries. Diving prelims will begin at 1 p.m.
