GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't recover from a seven-run fourth inning by No. 12 University of Florida Tuesday night, Feb. 24, in Gainesville, Fla. as the Gators handed the Eagles a 12-0 loss at McKethan Stadium. The loss drops EMU to 2-3 this season, while Florida improves to 4-0 with the win.
The Eagles managed just three hits against the Gator pitching staff, while Florida scored 12 runs on 17 hits in the victory.
Freshman Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) tallied his first-career multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one stolen base – the first of his career.
Sophomore Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, extending his hit streak to 11-games, dating back to last season. Leonard has hit safely in every game dating back to game one of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, May 21, 2008.
After tallying two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, the Gator offense exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, including two-run triple by Avery Barnes to give Florida a commanding 9-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ontario-Ontario Schools) took the loss for EMU, while Justin Poovey picked up the win for the Gators.
The Eagles and Gators will meet again tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Scheduled to start on the mound for EMU is sophomore Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne), while Anthony DeSclafani will get the nod for Florida.
