YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team won seven of the first nine events to defeat Miami University, 157-131, Saturday, Jan. 31 at Jones Natatorium. The RedHawks came into the meet as the No. 1 ranked team in Division I Mid-Major swimming and diving.
YPSILANTI, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team won seven of the first nine events to defeat Miami University, 157-131, Saturday, Jan. 31 at Jones Natatorium. The RedHawks came into the meet as the No. 1 ranked team in Division I Mid-Major swimming and diving.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in Mid-American Conference action.
The 400 medley relay team won the first event of the afternoon, finishing in 3:52.36. Freshman Samantha Partridge (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) then won the 1,000 free for the Green and White before Alissa Ricard (Tucson, Ariz.-Catalina Foothills) took home first in the 200 free. Sarah Maraskine(Midland, Mich.-Dow) continued the Eagles' hot streak to start the meet, picking up a victory in the 100 back.
The RedHawks came away with a win in the 100 breaststroke before the Eagles regrouped with Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley) winning the 200 fly. EMU then took three of the top four spots in the 50 free, led by Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) who hit the wall in 24.25. Ricard and Partridge then picked up their second wins of the afternoon in the 100 and 500 free, respectively.
Sam Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) out-touched Miami's Allison Way by .01 in the 100 fly to give the Eagles another first place finish. Ashley Durand (Lincoln, Neb.-Southeast) won the 200 IM before the 200 freestyle relay team ended the day on a positive note for the Eagles, winning in 1:36.11.
The Eagles wrap up the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m., when they host Ohio University at Jones Natatorium as part of Senior Day. The 2009 Senior Class will be honored prior to the meet.
