Appalachian State, Duke and Gardner-Webb await Eagles

Complete Release (pdf)

YPSILANTI, Mich.-
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will try to bounce back from a two-match losing skid Saturday, Jan. 31, when they take on Appalachian State University, Duke University and Gardner-Webb University at the annual Gardner-Webb Duals. The event, set to begin at 9 a.m., will mark the Eagles' final non-conference test of the season.

THREE FOR ALL: Fresh off its second consecutive setback to a nationally-ranked squad, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will trek to Boiling Springs, N.C. for the Gardner-Webb Duals Saturday, Jan. 31. The annual event, which gets underway at 9 a.m., will pit EMU against a trio of compeitiors including Duke University, Appalachian State University (10:30 a.m.) and hosts Gardner-Webb University (noon).

The Eagles have had sucess in recent history against both Duke and Gardner-Webb. Eastern bested the Bulldogs, 32-12, Feb. 9, 2008, at Bowen Field House. On Jan. 17, 2004, EMU trounced the Blue Devils, 35-5. The Green and White dropped its most previous match to the Mountaineers, 30-9, Jan. 5, 2008, in Arlington, Texas.

A BAKER'S DOZEN:
Eastern will head to Boiling Springs with 13 grapplers prepared to do battle, nine of which competed in Thursday's match against Central Michigan. Returners to the lineup include redshirt juniors Chris Jenkins at 125, David Pienaar at 141 and senior Don Funk at 174.

Jenkins, who owns a 9-7 season record, last competed at The Midlands, Dec. 29, while Funk (0-6) and Pienaar (12-6) last saw action at the F.I.T.E. Duals, Dec. 21. Moulton's (11-12) most recent bout was against No. 2 Cornell University, Jan. 17.

COACH DELPORTO SUMS IT UP: “We have six dual meets left, three of which are conference duals,” head coach Derek DelPorto said. “So we have a couple more opportunities to help our individual rankings and three more chances to place as high as we can in the conference regular season.”

Neither the third year head coach nor his team are willing to to stop their collective ambitions there. DelPorto added, “Our goal is obviously nothing less than winning the next six dual meets, getting to a 10-8 record and sending some guys to the NCAA Tournament.”

EAGLES CHIPPED BY CMU:
The Eagles (4-8; 0-2 MAC) dropped their second straight decision to a Mid-American Conference opponent Thursday, Jan. 22, when they were defeated by Central Michigan University, 27-6. The then-No. 6 Chippewas have now won 18 straight matches against the Eagles.

Despite winning only two matches – redshirt freshman J.J. Johnson at 149 and redshirt sophomore Nick Hendrick at 165 – Eagle grapplers managed to hold their competition to six points or less in six of 10 bouts. Sophomore Derek Foore just missed his 11th win of the season, falling in overtime to Vince DiDona, 6-4, at 184.

IMPROVEMENTS ALL-AROUND:
After a sub-par 1-5 start to the season, the Eagles have stepped up their performance with a 3-3 record over their last six duals. As coach Derek DelPorto has noted on several occasions throughout the season, his team's record could be drastically different with merely a few minor tweaks.

Thursday's loss to CMU was a sign of how far the Eagles have come this year, but a reminder of how far they have yet to go to reach their ultimate goals.

TIME CHANGE: The Eagles' final home match of the season against Kent State, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15, has been moved from a 4 p.m. to a 6 p.m. start time. The EMU wrestling team will be competing alongside the women's gymnastics team in the second annual “Beauty and the Beast” combined event.

Just a reminder to check the EMU Athletics website– www.emueagles.com– for all schedule changes!

EMU WRESTLING FAST FACT:
Doug Harper holds the EMU individal record for wins in a season (44), a feat which he accomplished in the 1988-89 season. He currently holds the sixth spot in all-time career wins with 78.
