MSU scores two first half goals en route to win
EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped its first contest of the season, falling to the Michigan State University Spartans, 3-0, Friday, Sept. 5, at DeMartin Stadium.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 1-1-2 on the year, while the Spartans remain perfect at 4-0-0. EMU had nine shots on the game, including four on-goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) had two saves, while allowing three goals on the afternoon.
MSU wasted no time getting on the board, scoring in the seventh minute when Lauren Hill chipped in a shot from 25 yards out, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. Michigan State was able to tack on another goal in the first half, as Laura Heyboer took advantage of breakaway, putting the home team up, 2-0, after the first 45 minutes.
The Eagles had their best chance to get on the board with about 25 minutes remaining in the second when Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) took a lead pass from freshman Katie Marsh (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), setting up a one-on-one situation with the goalie. Kinter’s shot headed for the left side of the goal, but MSU keeper Lindsey Wrege made a diving save to keep the score at 2-0.
Michigan State’s Heyboer added a goal of insurance and her second of the game, finding the back of the net with just over three minutes remaining, putting the game out of reach for the Eagles.
The Eagles continue their seven-game road swing Sunday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Charleston, Ill. to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers. Game time is set for 1 p.m.. (CST).
