EMU Notches Last-Second Win at IUPUI

Chelsea Detrick scores both goals, including game-winner with less than a second remaining
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- With less than a second remaining, freshman Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) found the back of the net to break a 1-1 tie and give the Eastern Michigan University soccer team a 2-1 victory over IUPUI, Sunday, Sept. 21 at Kuntz Field. Detrick fired a cross that deflected off an IUPUI defender into an open net, securing a win in regulation for the Eagles.
With the win, EMU moves to 5-2-2 on the season, while IUPUI drops to 3-4-0. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ont.-Sinclair Secondary) allowed one goal while making six saves to pick up her second victory of the year.
Detrick scored both goals for the Green and White, giving her a team-high seven for the season. Her first goal came right before halftime, as Indianapolis native Jessica Lathrop (Indianapolis, Ind.-Lawrence North) found Detrick with a short through ball that she was able to sneak by IUPUI keeper Jamie Farrell less than five minutes before halftime.
The Jaguars tied the score in the 67th minute when Alicia Brock scored her fifth goal of the season, beating Budani to the near post for the goal.
Just when it looked like the game was headed for overtime, Detrick fired a last-second cross that deflected off the head of Anna Pigg into the open net. With less than a second remaining, the Jaguars were not able to get off another shot, securing the victory for EMU.
The Eagles return to Scicluna Field to begin Mid-American Conference action next weekend. First up for EMU is Miami, with the RedHawks and Eagles set to kick-off Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. The Ball State Cardinals will then come to town for a Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon contest, with kick-off slated for 1 p.m.
