Bulldugs hit .351 compared to Eagles’ .074
PITTSBURGH, Penn.— The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team wrapped up play at the Pitt Invitational Saturday, Sept. 20. The Eagles recorded a 3-0 (15-25, 23-25, 17-25) loss to Gonzaga University. EMU finished the tournament with an 0-3 mark, and 5-9 on the season, while the Bulldogs went 1-2 for the weekend and 6-9 overall.
The Eagles struggled to hit throughout the match, hitting just .074, compared to Gonzaga’s .351. Junior Victoria Randolph (Cincinnati, Ohio-Mount Notre Dame) hit a team-high eight kills, while sophomore Jennifer Swartz (Canton-Mich.-Westland John Glenn) chipped in seven of her own. Senior Hayvolla Leite (Paraiba, Brazil-Indian Hills CC) had a team-best .273 hitting percentage. Defensively, Pittsburgh native junior Kim Jarzynka (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Baldwin) had 14 digs throughout the match.
For the Bulldogs Michelle Boevers led the way, tallying a match-high 10 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Elaina Renius, Emily Johnson and Layne Brosky all added eight apiece.
The Eagles came close to a comeback, leading the Bulldogs in set two, 21-16, but was unable to capitalize, as Gonzaga took the set, 25-23.
The Eagles will open Mid-American Conference play at the University of Toledo Friday, Sept. 26, before heading to Ball State University Saturday, Sept. 27.
