EMU scores three unanswered goals to pick up second consecutive win

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Despite giving up an early goal to the host Indiana State Sycamores, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team rebounded to record a 3-1 victory Friday, Sept. 19 at the ISU Soccer Complex. Senior Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) evened the score with her first goal of the season, while freshman Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) scored two goals in the second half to give the Eagles the win.

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 4-2-2 on the year, while Indiana State drops to 1-7-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) got the starting nod in goal, allowing one goal with five saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal.

The Sycamores struck first, scoring an early goal when Missy Journot was able to find the back of the net off a corner kick, less than 15 minutes into the game. The Eagles returned the favor just over six minutes later when Zundel headed in her first goal of the season off a Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner. The two teams tightened up defensively for the rest of the half, hitting halftime tied at 1-1.

Both teams struggled to find the offense in the second half, as neither team could break the 1-1 tie for the first 25 minutes. In the 71st minute, Detrick was able to get free, dribbling from about 40 yards out before firing a shot past the keeper, giving the Eagles a one-goal lead. The freshman, however, was not done scoring, as she scored another goal off a Katee True (Hudson, Ohio-Hudson) assist with just two minutes remaining, pushing the margin to 3-1.

The Eagles wrap up their seven-game road trip Sunday, Sept. 21 when they stay in the Hoosier state and travel to Indianapolis to take on the IUPUI Jaguars. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Kuntz Stadium.
