Freshman Vanessa Atansoski assists on both Eagle goals
BOCA RATON, Fla.- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team took advantage of two quick goals in the second half to record a 2-1 victory over the Florida Atlantic University Owls, Sunday, Sept. 14 at FAU Stadium. EMU scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half to put the match out of reach.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-2-2, while FAU drops to 1-3-0. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ont.-Sinclair Secondary) saw her first action since the 2006 season, recording one save while allowing one goal.
EMU once again struggled to find the offense in the first half, as the teams hit the break at a scoreless tie. The Eagles out-shot the Owls in the first frame, 4-1, but could not find the back of the net.
The Eagles found the offense right after halftime, as sophomore Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) scored her first goal of the season, finding the top left corner of the net for the score, a little over seven minutes into the half. Freshman Vanessa Atanasoski (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Stevenson) and senior Katie Zundel (Utica, Mich.-Henry Ford II) were both credited with the assist.
Eastern wasted no time scoring again, as junior Deana Kinter (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) scored her third goal of the season just under five minutes later. Atanasoski picked up her second assist of the game on Kinter’s goal, as she delivered a perfect cross on the break.
The Owls managed to score with just under four minutes remaining, putting the final margin at 2-1.
The Eagles wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule next weekend with a swing through the Hoosier State. First up for EMU is Indiana State, with the teams slated to kick off Friday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind. Eastern will then travel to Indianapolis to take on the IUPUI Jaguars, Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
