No. 28 University of Miami scores in 76th minute to stay undefeated
CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The Eastern Michigan University soccer team hung tough with the No. 28 University of Miami Hurricanes before ultimately dropping a 1-0 decision, Friday, Sept. 12 at Cobb Stadium. The Hurricanes and Eagles were scoreless for 76 minutes before Lauren Singer found the back of the net, giving the Hurricanes a lead they would not relinquish.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 2-2-2, while the Hurricanes remain undefeated at 7-0-0. UM goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo recorded her sixth shutout in seven games, recording one save against the Eagles. EMU goalie Maggie Manville (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) allowed one goal while notching seven saves on the evening.
The two teams battle to a scoreless halftime score, even though the Canes out-shot the Eagles, 11-2. Manville managed five saves in the first frame, keeping the Eagles in the game at the halfway mark.
The second half mirrored the first, as neither team could find the back of the net. In the 76th minute, Singer was able to get a shot off when the Eagles turned the ball over deep in their territory. The shot deflected to the left post off an Eagle defender, putting the Hurricanes up 1-0, with less than 25 minutes remaining in the game.
EMU was not able to get a shot off following that goal, with its best opportunity coming off a corner kick with less than a minute remaining. The Eagles were not able to cash in on that opportunity, dropping the game, 1-0.
EMU will wrap up its two-game swing through Florida Sunday, Sept. 14 when the Eagles take on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton. The Owls and Eagles are slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
