Eagles conclude another record-setting year with a 14th place finish

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf program shot a final round 307 Saturday afternoon to place 14th at the 2008 NCAA Division I Central Regional Championship at The Scarlet Course. The Eagles' three-round score of 906 (297-302-307) put them five strokes behind Indiana, who earned the 10th and final qualifying position for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship from the region's 27-team field.

The Eagles – who were appearing in their second consecutive NCAA Regional Championship – entered the day in 13th place. The Green and White concluded the tournament just two strokes back of Eastern Kentucky University and cross-county rival the University of Michigan, who tied for 12th with a 904.

Wake Forest picked the right time to play its best golf of the season, as the Demon Deacons posted a 27-over 879 (290-287-302) to win the regional crown. Wake defeated second-place Oklahoma State by 10 strokes to advance to the NCAA Championship for the fourth consecutive year. Rounding out the top 10 and advancing to the NCAA Championships were Florida, Louisville, Alabama, Texas A&M, Kent State, Penn State and Indiana.

TCU’s James Sacheck defeated Charles Ford of Tennessee on the second playoff hole to advance as an individual. Derek Tolan of Colorado also advanced after shooting rounds of 73-72-73 finish with a score of five-over 218.

Oklahoma State’s Kevin Tway shot his highest score of the week during the third round with a 75, but held on to earn medalist honors by a stroke. Tway finished at one-over par for the tournament.  Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest and Robert Rohanna of Penn State tied for second at 215. Rohanna tied for the low score of the day with a 70, along with Florida’s Billy Horschel and Sacheck. 

Senior Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario-Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) closed out his stellar EMU career with a final round 75 to finish tied for 20th with an 11-over 224 (80-79-75). Junior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) followed closely with a 226 (78-71-76) in 41st place.

Sophomore Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) closed the tournament with an 80 for a 233 (76-77-80) in 96th. Senior Peter Sauerbrei (Kingston, Ontario-Kingston Collegiate) rebounded with a four-over 75 to wrap-up the three-day event with a 235 (77-83-75). Meanwhile, sophomore Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) struggled in the tough scoring conditions with an 86 to finish tied for 109th with a 235 (74-75-86).
