Senior Graham Hill carded a one-under and is tied for second place among individuals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario-Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) shot a one-under par, 70, to help the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team place itself on solid footing in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Central Regional. The Eagles are in fifth place with a 13-over par 297, seven shots behind Wake Forest, at the regional hosted by Ohio State University at the par 71, 7,455 yard Scarlet Course.

Eastern Michigan is one of 27 teams vying for one of the 10 spots that will advance from the May 15-17 regional into the NCAA Championships to be held May 28-31 in West Lafayette, Ind.

EMU opened play Thursday by shooting 297 which is 13-over par on the par 71 course. Wake Forest shot a six-over, 290, to lead the field after the first 18 holes. No. 1 ranked Alabama fired a 292 for second place followed by Oklahoma State, 293, and Florida, 294. Texas A&M University, Illinois and Michigan are in a three-way tie for sixth at 299. Tied for ninth are Lamar and Ohio State who both shot 299.

At 11th and below the cut line were Indiana, 300, Louisville, Tennessee and Colorado, all at 301, Eastern Kentucky, Colorado, TCU, Kent State and Wichita State, all at 302, Arkansas and Penn State tied at 19th at 34, tied at 21st Georgia Tech and Baylor, 307, Texas-Arlington, 308, Cleveland State, 313, Marquette, 314, Sacred Heart, 316, and Loyola College, 318.

Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest is the first round leader on the player leader board. He shot two-under, 69 and has a one-shot lead ahead of five golfers, including Hill. The Brights Grove, Ontario native opened with 70 to be among that five-way tie for second.

Sophomore Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) turned in a round of three-over, 74, for a tie for 24th place. Classmate Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) added a five-over, 76, and resides in a tie for 55th. Senior Peter Sauerbrei (Kingston, Ontario-Kingston Collegiate) and junior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) rounded out the lineup with a 77 and a 78, respectively.

Head coach Bruce Cunningham and the Eagles will look to continue the momentum Friday, May 16, in second round action at the Scarlet Course. The Green and White’s first tee time of the day is scheduled for 12:59 p.m. on the 10th hole.
