Eagles Defeat RedHawks, 2-1

OXFORD, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team picked up a key Mid-American Conference victory, beating the Miami RedHawks, 2-1, here Saturday April 26 at the Miami Softball Stadium. The RedHawks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to get within one, but EMU stopped the rally to preserve the win.

With the win, EMU improves to13-25 (5-8 MAC), while Miami falls to 19-24 (9-8 MAC).

Freshman pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game. She went 7.0 innings, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out five on the evening to improve her record to 8-11. Offensively, EMU totaled eight hits, with senior Stephanie Sabo (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park Cabrini) and freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) both picking up two hits and an RBI apiece.

The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the second inning when freshman Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) doubled to centerfield, scoring when Sabo knocked a single to center. EMU took the early lead, 1-0, after two innings.

EMU tacked on another run in the seventh inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Lindsay Ritz (Garden City, Mich.-Garden City) singled up the middle, followed by another Sabo single. Head coach Karen Baird then brought in Jessica Patterson (Ionia, Mich.-Ionia) to pinch run for Ritz, who was on second base. The move paid off, as Patterson scored when Delapaz recorded her second hit of the day, an RBI single up the middle.

The RedHawks scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but EMU stopped the MU rally to preserve the win.

The Eagles and RedHawks will conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday, April 27. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Miami Softball Stadium.
