BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green State University, 3-0 and 9-4, here, today, April 11, at the BGSU Softball Complex.
The Eagles are now 8-20 (0-4 MAC) on the season, while Bowling Green improves to 6-19 (6-2 MAC).
In the first game of the twinbill, the Eagles totaled four hits against reigning MAC East Pitcher of the Week, Hayley Wiemer. Wiemer pitched all seven innings, striking out six en route to the victory. For EMU, freshman Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy’s Priory) (4-9) was charged with loss after pitching 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out four. Sophomore Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) came on in relief, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out one.
Senior Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) went 2-for-3 at the plate, with senior Jessica Grant (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) and freshman Lauren Delapaz (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) accounted for the other two Eagle hits.
The Eagles found the offense in the second game, but it was not enough as the Falcons prevailed, 9-4. EMU tied the game at four after the top of the fourth, but the Falcons rattled off five unanswered runs to record the victory. Wiemer was once again key for the Falcons, pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Brown and Orange, picking up her second straight win over the Eagles.
Freshman Kari Chambers (Woodstock, Ga.-Woodstock) pitched 4.0 innings for EMU, giving up five earned runs and seven hits, while striking out two. Chambers (4-9) was charged with the loss, with Hletko and Caro both pitching in relief for the Eagles.
EMU had eight hits in the second game, doubling its output from the first game. Senior outfielder Heather Giroux (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) hit her first career home run, with sophomore outfielder Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) hitting her sixth homer of the season. Scherer is now up to fourth on the all-time list in home runs, tied with Liz Flack at 17.
Freshman Stacie Skodinski (South Bend, Ind.-Washington) went 2-for-2, while Strauss went 2-for-4, with a double for the Green and White. It was the 32nd double of her career, putting her in fifth place on the career list.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 12 when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on the Rockets at Scott Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The Eagles and Rockets will also play Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
