Bestehorn and Stankovic record singles wins
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team ran into a tough University of Chicago-Illinois squad today, falling 5-2 earlier today at the Evergreen Racquet and Fitness complex. The Flames gained momentum heading into singles action after sweeping all three doubles matches.
Lubica Nadasska and Kristen McPhillips team up to defeat Vanessa Frankowski and Tina Bestehorn in No. 1 doubles action, 8-6. The team of Grace Gill-Morlis and Ulrikke von Ubisch in No. 2 doubles and Jenna Reisch and Illinca Cristescu in No. 3 doubles followed suit, winning 8-3 and 8-4 respectively.
"In competitive sport, the team with the strongest will survives, and we are not that team right now,” said second-year head coach Ryan Ray. “We need to make the adjustments necessary to compete in a difficult MAC Conference schedule starting in less than 2 weeks."
The Flames continued their winning ways, taking four of six matches in singles action. After dropping the first set 6-3 to Cristescu, Frankowski battled back to take the second set 6-1. In a tough third match, Cristescu was able to prevail, winning 6-3.
The Eagles weren’t able to get on the board until the No. 4 singles match, with Bestehorn holding on for the 6-2, 7-6 (5) win. Aleksandra Stankovic was a winner in the No. 5 slot for EMU, defeating von Ubisch 6-2, 6-2.
EMU will be back in action Wednesday, March 12, as they travel to East Lansing, Mich. to take on Big Ten foe and in-state rival Michigan State University. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
