Senior propels EMU to win with extra innings single

Box Score

YPSILANTI
, Mich. — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team relied on extra-inning heroics to win its fifth straight game, defeating Miami University 3-2 in 11 innings here Sunday, March 30, at Oestrike Stadium. Senior Jeff Davis (Avondale, Ariz.-Westview) drove in Steve Bradshaw (Lapeer, Mich.-West) for the winning run in the bottom of the 11th with his single down the right-field line. EMU completed the series sweep today after taking yesterday’s doubleheader, 8-6 and 2-1 respectively.

The Eagles, now 5-17, 3-0 MAC on the year, were led by Davis, Bradshaw and freshman Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow), each registering two hits on the day. Senior Dan Puls (Alpena, Mich.-Alpena) picked up his first win of the year after tossing two innings of no-hit ball while striking out two.

Junior Matt Shoemaker (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) took the mound to start the game, giving up a run in both the first and second innings to give Miami the early 2-0 through an inning and a half. Shoemaker (1-3) settled down after the Eagles fought back in the bottom of the second to knot the game at two off a Skirving RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park), pitching the next six innings without allowing a run to cross the plate. For the day he went nine innings, giving up just the two early runs and registering one strikeout in the no decision.

For the second straight day, the Eagles and RedHawks needed extra innings to decide a winner. A Green and White victory seemed certain in the bottom of the 10th as the Eagles had the bases loaded with just one out, however, Bobby Oberschlake was able to induce Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) into a six-four-three double play to get out of the jam.

Puls (1-2) made quick work of Miami in the 11th, getting Blake Chaffee to fly out to center field before striking out Josh Hula and forcing an Adam Eaton groundout to end the inning.

Bradshaw singled to lead off the bottom half of the 11th inning and advanced to second on an Aaron Powell (Clarkston, Mich.-Clarkston) sacrifice bunt. Bradshaw made his way to third on an Oberschlake wild pitch and stood just 90 feet from home plate and a fifth straight win before Davis’ rope down the right-field line allowed him to easily make his way home.

The Eagles take their five-game winning streak on the road for the next week. They will travel to Cleveland State, Tuesday, April 1, for a single game followed by a trip back to East Lansing, April 2, battling Michigan State. First pitch against CSU is scheduled for 4 p.m.
