Senior to team with Detroit Mercy's Mark Sommerfeld at the event

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University senior Graham Hill (Brights Grove, Ontario-Northern Collegiate (Indiana (Pa.)) is heading south of the border this week, March 27-30, to take part in the 81st Annual Mexican Amateur Championship and International Pairs Tournament in Mexico City. Hill will team with fellow countryman and University of Detroit Mercy standout Mark Sommerfeld during the international event.

Overall, players from 25 countries will be competing in the 72-hole tournament at the Club de Golf México. Hill will be representing Canada as a member of the six-man National Amateur Team. The winner of this week’s tournament receives an automatic exemption into the Mexican Open.

Hill, the 2007 Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year, has been one of EMU’s most consistent scorers during his three-year career for the Eagles. The Brights Grove, Ontario native has played in 24 rounds during the 2007-08 campaign. Hill is averaging 72.6 strokes per round, the lowest scoring average on the squad and the third best in the MAC.

Sommerfeld, the reigning two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, comes into the tournament on a hot streak. He has fired four straight sub-par rounds this spring, taking third place individually at the Fort Lauderdale Classic, then winning medalist honors at William & Mary’s First Market Bank Intercollegiate.

Hill and the rest of his Eagles teammates will take a few weeks off before returning to action at the Palisades Golf Classic in Charlotte, N.C., April 14-15.
